EUROCLIMA+ participates in the Regional Workshop on the Integration of Gender Aspects in National Climate Action in the Latin American and Caribbean Region, organised by the UNFCCC,
facilitating the discussion group on coherence and alignment of the countries' work on the integration of gender aspects and climate change.
Under the framework of the Lima Work Programme on Gender (LWPG/COP25), the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is organising a series of regional workshops to discuss the integration of gender issues into national policies, plans, strategies and measures for climate change.
On 16 September 2002, the Regional Workshop on the Integration of Gender Aspects in National Climate Action in the Latin American and Caribbean region was held. With more than 350 people registered, the virtual session was attended by representatives of Empodera Clima, the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, the United Nations Development Programme, as well as government representatives from Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica, Santa Lucia, Saint Vincent, Chile and Canada, among others.
The EUROCLIMA+ programme was present via Estibalitz Morrás, a technical specialist in climate governance from the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), who facilitated one of the discussion groups on the coherence and alignment of the countries’ work on the integration of gender aspects and climate change. Some of the conclusions of the working groups indicate that certain instruments already exist at the national level, such as the support to Nationally Determined Contributions, which favour the mainstreaming of gender aspects and climate change, supporting in turn the international mandate of the Secretariat. On issues of coherence it was stressed that we still face many challenges as this depends on political will, budgets, as well as other structural problems and new scenarios such as the current pandemic.
In this line EUROCLIMA+ promotes concrete actions that increase climate ambition by supporting the countries of the region in advancing gender equality through the integration of the gender perspective in policies, national plans, and other measures. It is also recognised that gender equality has been at the heart of EU-LA cooperation since the creation of the EUROCLIMA+ programme and there are different instruments for its operationalisation such as the EUROCLIMA+ Gender Toolkit.
