Honduras takes firm steps towards climate financing inclusion to meet its NDC

More than 20 institutions from the public and private sectors, academia and international cooperation met in Honduras to make progress on the definition

of a Climate Financing Inclusion (CFI) policy to enable the country to meet its climate commitments in the context of the Paris Agreement (NDC).

Tegucigalpa, December 18, 2019. Access to climate financing is one of the main challenges that countries face in meeting their climate commitments in the context of the Paris Agreement. Honduras has set a goal of restoring one million hectares under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and to ensure compliance it has proposed the development of a policy for Climate Financing Inclusion (CFI).

With this in mind, under the leadership of the Presidential Office for Climate Change (Clima+), and with the support of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme and the European Union Delegation in the country, Honduras initiated the process called "Sectoral Technical Tables for Climate Financing Inclusion", which will allow the country to make progress on the formulation and subsequent implementation of a Climate Financing Inclusion (CFI) policy. The purpose of this is to enable the country's various production sectors to promote the implementation of measures and actions that contribute to the fight against climate change through fair and timely access to climate financing.

For Marlon Escoto, Presidential Delegate for Climate Change in Honduras, "climate financing inclusion is not a rhetorical concept, it is a reality that is occurring in the countryside for the climate and well-being of our producers.” "Holding this first Technical Table and the ones that follow will allow the Government of Honduras to have technical assistance for the generation of the necessary enabling frameworks so that the different productive sectors of the country can make climate-smart investments, reducing their greenhouse gas emissions while also improving their levels of well-being and resilience to the impacts of climate change. All in accordance with NDC compliance," said Mr. Escoto.

For his part, Mr. David Mogollón, Head of Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union (DUE) in Honduras, expressed his satisfaction with the direction Honduras is taking to face climate change and comply with its international commitments in this area. At the opening of the first Technical Table, Mr. Mogollón stressed that "these tables are fundamental as they will form the basis of the dialogue for the definition of a climate policy that has great potential and demonstrates great climate ambition on the part of the Government of Honduras.” “Climate change and the implementation of the NDC are priority issues in which the European Union will continue to collaborate with Honduras," added the head of DUE cooperation in the country during his intervention.

The first sectoral table for climate financing inclusion was attended by more than 20 institutions from the public and private sectors, academia and international cooperation, demonstrating the commitment of Honduras and its productive sector to achieve the national goal of restoring one million hectares under its NDC.

It should be noted that the process "Technical Sectoral Tables for Climate Financial Inclusion in Honduras" is facilitated by the German society for international cooperation (GIZ) and it is part of the framework for the Country Dialogue between Honduras and the EUROCLIMA+ Programme to support the implementation of its NDC.
