COP28 | Dubai 2023

As the devastating impact of extreme climate events continues to escalate around the world, there is an urgent need to strengthen our commitments to a green and just transition.

The European Union, a leader in climate action, and the main global partner in cooperation, establishes strategic alliances with other regions to support processes of mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Euroclima, a regional cooperation Programme that fosters the strategic partnership between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, is proud to have participated once again in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), to be part of the discussions and to join the call for climate action.

Towards an Inclusive Energy Transition: Integrating all into a sustainable energy future

For ensuring a sustainable transition to renewable energy models it is essential to incorporate a social inclusion approach. Euroclima, together with its Latin American and Caribbean partners has been involved in the identification and implementation of energy efficiency measures across the region. In this opportunity the Programme seeks to learn from these related lessons and support countries in the implementation of efficient measures to ensure a transition to clean renewable energies with a focus on social equality and the local impact, with preferent attention on communities most affected by climate change.

Accelerating green investment for the LAC region barriers, solutions, the role of the EU Global

To address the challenges in transitioning towards a greener, fairer and more inclusive development model, we must increasingly embrace a public-private form of collaboration. This event is designed to inform and foster discussions around the available tools and methodologies that can unlock and support private sector investments towards transformative change in Latin America and Caribbean countries, cities, regions, industries and value chains. Building on the momentum after the Wider Caribbean-EU Regional Conference on Sargassum, hosted by the Government of the Dominican Republic and supported by the EU, and the EU-CELAC Summit Joint Declaration on this challenge, this high-level investment focused event aims at consolidating shared understanding on emerging trends, experience on sargassum valorisation and discussing gaps and opportunities for investment and private sector engagement. Attention will be placed on how the EU Global Gateway Investment Agenda can support ongoing actions to ultimately turn the proliferation of these algae into an economic opportunity.

Methodologies to unlock the potential of circular economy in the LAC region

Given the great challenge of urban transformation and the cross-cutting integration of climate action in municipal policies, many LAC cities have expressed their ambition for systemic transformation, collaborative work and cross-learning for circular economy strategies and processes. This event will bring together senior city experts and policymakers from selected cities in LAC and Europe to showcase best practices and provide a two-way opportunity for knowledge sharing and networking to achieve objectives that cannot be achieved individually.

Clean mobility and electromobility as a driver for sustainable urban development

In the last 30 years since the Earth Summit, technological advances in renewable electricity generation and electricity-based mobility have been very significant. Urban transport and electromobility are sectors of cooperation identified in the EU-CELAC Joint Declaration and are relevant themes in the framework of the EU's Global Gateway strategy and projects. During the event, experiences in urban mobility related to the implementation of Euroclima+ in the Central American region will be presented and a fruitful exchange between the actors involved in those actions will be promoted.

- Side-event co-oganised with Central American Integration System (SICA) and will take place in the SICA pavilion.

EU-LAC Cooperation on Sargassum: Urgency and Opportunities for Action and Investment

Building on the momentum after the Wider Caribbean-EU Regional Conference on Sargassum, hosted by the Government of the DR and supported by the EU, and the EU-CELAC Summit Joint Declaration on this challenge, this high-level investment focussed event aims at consolidating shared understanding on emerging trends, experience on sargassum valorisation and discussing gaps and opportunities for investment and private sector engagement. Attention will be placed on how the EU Global Gateway Investment Agenda can mobilise resources to ultimately turn the proliferation of these algae into an economic opportunity.

Euroclima is the European Union's flagship programme on environmental sustainability and climate change with Latin America. It aims to reduce the impact of climate change and its effects in Latin America by promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation through resilience and investment.
