Raising awareness in public officials of Ecuador under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ project "Risk Management without Borders".

Thursday, October 17, 2019. Gonzanamá canton (Ecuador). Through the European Union’s EUROCLIMA+ Programme and under the framework of the Risk Management component implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD), the "Binational Project for the Reduction of the Vulnerability of the Population and their Livelihoods to the Threats of Droughts and Floods in Border Territories of Ecuador and Peru" or "Risk Management without Borders", is being implemented in the countries of Peru and Ecuador, is developing various awareness-raising actions.

In the workshop to raise awareness in public officials of Ecuador in order to strengthen the capacities of local authorities in the use of participatory tools for diagnosis and identification of important aspects of the public policy for Risk Management in the canton of Gonzanamá, Enrique Ponce Chiriboga, technician of the binational project "Risk Management without Borders" expressed his concern calling on authorities and public officials to take action against prolonged dry periods in the absence of rain as the main climate threat affecting the canton of Gonzanamá in the country of Ecuador.

The specialist showed the current situation in confronting climate change and invited public officials to promote state policies that contribute to minimising the problem of global warming that not only affects the country of Ecuador, but all countries of the world.

He also explained the objectives and results of the binational project "Risk Management without Borders" that are being implemented in 7 cantons and 3 parishes, located in the binational Catamayo-Chira Basin co-executed by the Piura Regional Government in Peru and the Provincial Government of Loja and the National Service for Risk and Emergency Management in Ecuador.

Participating in the workshop were representatives of Gonzanamá canton, the parishes of Purunuma, Sacapalca, Changaimina, and Nambacola, the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Public Health, Social Security Campesino, the Electricity Company, Association of Persons with Disabilities, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), National Service for Risk and Emergency Management, and the Prefecture of Loja.

The binational project "Risk Management without Borders" is co-executed by the Piura Regional Government, the Loja Provincial Government and the National Service for Risk and Emergency Management of Ecuador. It is funded by the European Union through the Euroclima+ programme and implemented through the Risk Management component by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
