Under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, representatives of the selected projects meet in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

February 19, 2019. “Our aim is to establish synergies and create work networks; we are a network of experts identifying solutions in the risk management sector,” said Sofía Mata Modrón, Director of the AECID Training Centre of Cartagena de Indias, during the opening of the Coordination and Planning workshop for the Risk Management component of the EUROCLIMA+ programme.

This workshop, which will be held from February 19 to 21, aims to establish a basis for coordination that facilitates the coherent implementation of the component and assists working groups and knowledge communities with the development of regulatory and planning frameworks, management and monitoring instruments and systems, and early warning systems, among others. In addition, it intends to incorporate the gender and intercultural perspective in each project, facilitating dialogue with and among the environmental ministries, implementing agencies and the European Union delegations of the 18 Latin American country partners of the EUROCLIMA+ programme.

During the inauguration, Eliécer Díaz, deputy director of Meteorology of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), a Colombian government entity, indicated that it is necessary to promote a common process among all those involved “... it is urgent that we are able to respond to regional needs related to risk management in the context of climate change, we have to take advantage of what we already know, and learn to strengthen ourselves.”

For his part, Luis Solzini of the European Union Delegation, Nicaragua, recalled that Latin America is exposed to constant and recurring natural events with increasing impact on society. “Therefore, we must strengthen measures for working on environmental sustainability against climate events and reinforce these actions among all.” Along the same lines, Benoît Maudit of the French Development Agency (AFD), stressed that thanks to this type of collaborative work promoted by EUROCLIMA+, they have been able to link actions between AECID and AFD with greater force. “Working together between these two European agencies also strengthens the links and the results we aim to achieve in each country.”

This workshop involves representatives of each of the seven projects approved that are financed with European funds under the “Disaster Risk Reduction and Management” component, as well as representatives of the ministries of environment, meteorological and hydrological services, agricultural sector, water, risk management and European Union delegations. This component is implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and the French Development Agency.
