Panama, October 11, 2022. Representatives of families from about a thousand residences in the capital and provinces of Panama will be surveyed starting this October, and until next November, as part of the residential phase of the National Balance in Useful Energy (BEU) project, coordinated by the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), through the National Secretariat of Energy (SNE).

The Useful Energy Balance (BEU) is a tool that allows consumption information to be available by subsectors, uses and technologies; providing a more detailed knowledge about energy needs and the efficiency with which the available energy is consumed. It is a fundamental tool for the design of public policies and the planning of the energy sector, being also an input for the realization of prospective energy studies.

Panama was selected together with Ecuador and Paraguay for the execution of the BEU Project, which is financed by the European Union within the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, under the coordination and technical assistance of Olade, accompanied by the Bariloche Foundation (FB), in coordination with the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID).

The survey will be conducted at the national level simultaneously in the 10 Panamanian provinces. It is estimated that around 1,000 residences will be visited for the survey: 50% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas.

Panama officially began the process of collecting information in the industrial sector for the preparation of its first "Useful Energy Balance (BEU), for the industrial, residential, transport and/or commercial sectors", on March 5 within the framework of the commemoration of World Energy Efficiency Day.

In this regard, the training process was launched for the technical team that will be in charge of the collection of information in the industrial sector of our country, Ecuador and Paraguay, beneficiary countries. The technical team consists of a national coordinator, a fieldwork director, survey supervisors and enumerators. This training was delivered in two stages: training for survey supervisors and training for enumerators.

In Panama, the training of the enumerators had the participation of Dr. Guadalupe González, Director of Electricity of the National Secretariat of Energy and Eng. Medardo Cadena, Director of Studies, Projects and Information of Olade.

About the BEU project

The project "Elaboration of the Energy Balance in Terms of Useful Energy for the Industry, Residential, Transport and/or Commercial (BEU) Sectors" is executed in Panama, Ecuador and Paraguay by the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), thanks to the financial support of the European Union Euroclima+ Programme and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The objective of the BEU Project is to strengthen the technical capacity of the institutions in charge of energy planning, in the management of information at the level of the efficient use of energy for the development and monitoring of energy efficiency policies and plans.

The Useful Energy Balance will be a key tool for proper planning, as well as having a mechanism for monitoring and evaluation of measures for applied energy efficiency.
