Training and practice for climate empowerment in Peru

Through in-situ training at the Rontoccocha lagoon, the Water for Abancay project team learned about tools for hydro-ecological monitoring, which will allow them to collect, analyse and interpret data on this area.

9 July 2021. Abancay, Peru. During the month of June, the 'Water for Abancay' team of the EUROCLIMA+ Urban Water sector carried out field trips to the Rontoccocha lagoon, where the project is implemented, to strengthen their theoretical knowledge on hydroecological monitoring: application, instrumentation, data collection, analysis and interpretation.

This activity, which is part of the project's information and training cycle programme, consisted of on-site practices, with which they learned, among other tools, how to download and record data; change the batteries of sensors and rain gauges; format the memories in rain gauges and sensors; calibrate equipment (rain gauges and sensors); and repair and maintain equipment.

The visit was led by Jan Baiker of Helvetas Peru, the entity responsible for the training and participating partner of the project; and was attended by officials from EPS Emusap Abancay, CEDES Apurímac (also participating entities of the project), SUNASS, the coordinating entity of Water for Abancay, and professionals from the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas (UNAMBA) and the Universidad Tecnológica de los Andes (UTEA).
