Local stakeholders and policy makers in forest management are expected to be present.

Salta City, Argentina, 3 June 2021. The EUROCLIMA+ Programme's "Living and Producing in the Chaco Forest" project has designed a free virtual course to train different audiences, including decision-makers, providing knowledge on the use of tools for land use change scenarios.

During the course, called "Future land use scenarios with Dinamica-EGO", the course will explain Dinamica-EGO, a software that shows advances in the development of scenarios in the Greater Chaco region that show the transformations in land use in the future.  Participants will also learn about the importance of the use of location data as a territorial planning tool in the generation of alternative future scenarios, which allow different perspectives and scales of analysis to be brought into dialogue in order to contribute to the strengthening and development of public policies.

The instructors in charge of the course are: M. Sc. María Jesús Mosciaro (National Institute of Agricultural Technology Salta); Dr. Noelia Calamari (National Institute of Agricultural Technology Paraná); Dr. José N. Volante (National Institute of Agricultural Technology Salta).

Target Public
Agents linked to research, forest management or territorial planning.

Date and time
From 10 June to 13 July  2021

Sessions and topics

The course will be divided into the following sessions and will cover the following topics:

1) 10 June: Theoretical concepts of land use/land cover change modelling and future scenarios (to be transmitted on the YouTube channel of INTA-Salta-Jujuy).

2) 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 June and 1 July: Theoretical and practical aspects of modelling spatially explicit land use/land cover change and future scenarios with Dinamica-EGO. General structure of the Dinamica-EGO programme environment. Definition of raster cube. Main steps of the raster cube creation model. Sequence of steps for the creation of a raster cube by means of a practical example in Dinamica-EGO.

This second session will address the various stages of the modelling process:

  • Compilation of input data,
  • Evaluation of spatio-temporal changes,
  • Analysis of determinant factors, calibration and validation of simulation models,
  • Division of the study area into regions and application of spatial masks.

Each session will include a theoretical part describing the use of Dinamica-EGO, accompanied by a demonstration of how to access, build, model and analyse the results. These demonstrations will use freely available data and software.

For didactic purposes, the second stage will be divided into 6 sessions describing each step of the methodology to be followed, each lasting between 15 and 45 minutes.

The materials will be available in a downloadable drive and the videos can be viewed on Inta Salta-Jujuy's YouTube channel.

3) 6 July: Final session for general questions, which will be broadcast live on INTA Salta-Jujuy's Youtube channel.

4) 13 July: Deadline for the self-evaluation of the course.

Methodology

In addition to the Youtube sessions, materials will be made available on a drive.

As students progress through the methodology, they can submit questions on a worksheet on the drive.

About EUROCLIMA+

EUROCLIMA+ is a programme funded by the European Union and co-financed by the German Federal Government through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as by the governments of France and Spain. Its objective is to reduce the impact of climate change and its effects in 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries by promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation, resilience and investment. The Programme is implemented under the synergistic work of seven agencies: the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Expertise France (EF), the International and Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and UN Environment.
