A high-level meeting with Honduran authorities, technicians from DUE and EUROCLIMA+, to exchange experiences that will allow for interventions and contributions to a system for climate financing inclusion.

June 11, 2020, Tegucigalpa.- The EUROCLIMA+ programme is supporting the implementation of climate financing inclusion in Honduras, to reach the goal of restoring 1 million hectares of forest by 2030, with an assessment of its feasibility. This initiative is being promoted by the Presidential Office for Climate Change and, in particular, by its Presidential Delegate, Dr. Marlon Escoto. The aim of this initiative is for small agricultural producers to have access to financing mechanisms that are appropriate to their needs for implementing forestry and agro-forestry systems that contribute to restoring the country's forested area, receiving training and financial resources at low rates that also improve their socio-economic conditions. This increase in forest cover is expected to make a major contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change, thanks to carbon sequestration in the new plantations.

Last Thursday on June 11, a virtual meeting was held between the Honduran Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment, the Honduran Presidential Office for Climate Change, the EU Delegation in the country and representatives of the EUROCLIMA+ programme. The objective of this meeting was to analyse the role that the Ministry of Environment could play in the Climate Financing Inclusion Initiative that Honduras is planning in order to achieve the forest restoration goal.

Minister Elvis Rodas participated in the meeting as the maximum representative of the Secretariat, a key institution for the fulfilment of Honduras' climate goals, who expressed his commitment to this process, highlighting the importance of aligning the productive sectors around the achievement of climate objectives. Likewise, Minister Rodas highlighted the need to have robust platforms to follow up on actions that allow for an adequate accounting of the actions undertaken.
