Santiago de Chile, July 31, 2018. More than 100 experts met in Santiago de Chile to present experiences on the articulation between sectors and levels of government to enhance the implementation of NDC in the region.

Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change - ratified in 2016 - requires a transformation of the economy towards sustainable, resilient and low-emission development. To achieve this, it is urgent to accelerate the implementation process of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which represent the commitments assumed by the countries to comply with the Agreement and deal with climate change.

Some countries have already started to develop roadmaps for the implementation of their NDCs. However, how can the implementation of NDCs in Latin America be strengthened? What experiences and opportunities are there? What is the importance of the articulation between sectors and levels of government? What role does the private sector play? In what innovative way can capacities be generated and achieve the expected results?

In order to answer these and other questions, more than 100 experts, representatives of national and subnational governments, cooperation agencies, private sector, academia and organized civil society, mainly from Latin American countries, will meet in Santiago, Chile from August 1 to 3, in the “Regional Dialogue on sectoral and multilevel articulation to strengthen the implementation of NDCs in Latin America”.

During the meeting the experiences of the participating countries will be presented, emphasizing how articulation at sector (energy, transport) and territorial (cities and municipalities) levels is contributing to the implementation of the NDCs. Based on the experiences and contributions of the participants, needs and opportunities of the countries of the region will be identified to enhance and strengthen this implementation.

The inaugural session will feature relevant personalities from the political and environmental fields such as the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) - Alicia Bárcena, the Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union Delegation in Chile - Ruth Bajada, the Director of Environment and Climate Change of CAF - Ligia Castro, and the CEO of the Inter-municipal Consortium of the Western Metropolitan Region of San Pablo (CIOESTE) - Francisco Maciel, among others.

The event is jointly organized by the initiative “Dialogue between peers to promote the implementation of NDCs in Latin America” (executed by the Avina Foundation and the German Cooperation Agency GIZ, in collaboration with ECLAC, under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ programme) and the Regional Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean for Resilient and Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS LAC).

It has the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, as well as the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the US Department of State, and NDC Partnership.
