Exchange of experiences between Peruvian and Bolivian Tarwi and Cañahua producers.

07 December 2021 - In the framework of the project Promoting the Heritage of Our Ancestors: Resilient Production, Marketing and Consumption of Cañahua

 and Tarwi, a project that is part of the Euroclima+ programme, financed by the European Union, implemented by Swisscontact and co-implemented by Proinpa. The experience exchanges between Tarwi and Cañahua producers took place in Peru.

The objective of the experience exchange was to promote producers' ancestral knowledge of sowing, harvesting, best agricultural practices and climate change mitigation. The activity took place with producers representing the municipalities of Jesús de Machaca and Caquiaviri in the department of La Paz, the municipality of Anzaldo in Cochabamba and the municipality of Acasio in northern Potosí, 15 visitors received by producers from the municipality of Yunguyo and Zepita (Peru) exchanged knowledge that will strengthen their Cañahua and Tarwi production chains.

Nestor Chambi Pacoricona, executive director of the Chuyma Rural Support Association (Chuyma Aru) mentioned that the experience exchange activity is intended to generate adaptation to climate change by producers, its importance in recognising and practicing the ancestral knowledge of their ancestors in terms of planting, harvesting and best agricultural practices "It is about sharing the results obtained, challenges and lessons learned in our agricultural work and thus complement the wisdom of our ancestors with current technology, which will allow us to cope with climate change".

Fernando Mamani, a Cañihua producer from the municipality of Choquecahua in the department of Puno in Peru, valued the activity carried out in terms of the exchange of experiences promoted by Proinpa (Bolivia) and Chuyma Aru (Peru) "Thanks to the training we have received, since last year we have been strengthening Cañihua crops again, with the vision that in the not too distant future we will also be able to export our Cañihua like our brother producers in neighbouring Bolivia".

Celia Esther Carita Laime, a Cañahua producer from Jesús de Machaca, Bolivia, expressed her gratitude to the institutions that support these activities that allow them to unite and strengthen ties of brotherhood and knowledge to increase their knowledge that will help them in their Tarwi and Cañahua planting "We are grateful to the Euroclima project and the Proinpa engineers for giving us the opportunity to learn about and share ancestral experiences with our Peruvian producer brothers, respect for mother earth and the hills. Also, thanks to the support of Proinpa, we have known and shared the varieties of Cañahua such as: Cañahuiri, Illimani and Lasta Rosada. We have seen how their crops are treated, the use of water from Lake Titicaca and the organic preparation for sowing".

About the project "Resilient Heritage of the Andes Cañahua and Tarwi".

The project promotes the resilience of rural farmer production systems in the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands, strengthening the Cañahua and Tarwi production complexes by improving the production, marketing and consumption of superfoods that are part of the food heritage of both countries, benefiting 1,200 producer families.
