Means to promote the financing, sustainability and effectiveness of Nature-based Solutions

NbS have played a central role in the discussions at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in recent years, especially at the COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite the fact that NbS are widely recognized as effective measures to address the challenges associated with climate change, there are still some challenges to their implementation.
Among them are challenges related to gathering the necessary data for designing actions, assessing their effectiveness, monitoring benefits, governance for their execution (including the necessary regulatory frameworks) and financing. This policy summary focuses on the challenges associated with promoting and facilitating the financing for NbS that these projects need to address in order to ensure the implementation and sustainability of these measures.

Challenges and opportunities for policy makers and development practitioners on how to bridge the climate finance gap
El documento “Reconociendo las Soluciones basadas en la Naturaleza (SbN): la experiencia del proyecto Resiliencia Andina en Ecuador a la luz del Estándar Global sobre SbN” ha sido elaborado en el marco del proyecto “Resiliencia Andina: fortaleciendo la producción agropecuaria de pequeña escala en zonas vulnerables al cambio climático en la sierra de Ecuador y Perú”, del programa EUROCLIMA+ en el sector Producción Resiliente de Alimentos (PRA). Las acciones en el sector PRA son implementadas por la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) y Expertise France.
The project “Green Economic Recovery: Mobilizing investments towards a low-emission and climate-resilient economy in Latin America and the Caribbean” aimed to support selected LAC countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Grenada, Honduras and Panama) to address the main barriers faced by countries when designing, planning and financing post-COVID-19 recovery plans aligned with the Paris Agreement.
Nature-based Solutions have increasingly gained relevance in the field of climate action, and have been incorporated into countries' climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions - NDCs).
La Reducción de Riesgo de Desastre basado en Ecosistemas (Eco-RRD) es una alternativa natural para enfrentar los efectos de la variabilidad y el cambio climáticos dentro del marco de las Soluciones basadas en la Naturaleza (SbN).
El proyecto “Recuperación Económica Verde: Movilizando inversiones hacia una economía baja en emisiones y resiliente al clima en América Latina y el Caribe” tuvo por objetivo el apoyar a países seleccionados de ALC (Argentina, Costa Rica, Granada, Honduras y Panamá) para abordar las principales barreras que enfrentan los países al diseñar, planificar y financiar planes de recuperación post-COVID-19 alineados con el Acuerdo de París.
