Contributions of indigenous peoples to climate action in Latin America: Experiences in the forests, biodiversity and ecosystems sector

The EUROCLIMA+ programme projects in the “Forests, Biodiversity and Ecosystems” (FBE) sector are implemented, in most cases, in regions with indigenous populations. Many of the implementing entities of these projects have extensive experience and knowledge of the problems of indigenous peoples and the promotion of their rights. Similarly, some of these entities have been working with indigenous peoples and local communities for a long time, collecting and systematizing their knowledge on vulnerability to climate change, in addition to identifying climate change mitigation and/or adaptation solutions that are currently being implemented, or finding new solutions together.

La recopilación de experiencias de sobre Vulnerabilidad y Riesgos Climáticos en el Sector Agropecuario en América Latina se desarrolló en el marco del sector temático Producción Resiliente de Alimentos (PRA) del programa EUROCLIMA+, financiado por la Unión Europea y cofinanciado por el gobierno federal de Alemania a través del Ministerio Federal de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo (BMZ), así como los gobiernos de Francia y España. Las acciones en el sector PRA son implementadas por la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) y Expertise France.
La crisis económica y sanitaria generada por la pandemia del COVID-19 ha producido cambios significativos en la movilidad urbana de América Latina, observándose patrones regresivos como el incremento en el uso del automóvil particular o el aumento de motocicletas de reparto, así como una fuerte disminución del uso de los servicios de transporte público y del uso de sistemas de bicicletas compartidas.
NbS have played a central role in the discussions at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in recent years, especially at the COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite the fact that NbS are widely recognized as effective measures to address the challenges associated with climate change, there are still some challenges to their implementation.
The participation of indigenous peoples in climate action is widely recognised as a crucial element in formulating inclusive and effective policies. This is not only because indigenous peoples receive relatively greater impacts resulting from the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss, but also because they possess traditional knowledge, technologies and practices for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) focus on the importance of ecosystems, and the services they provide people, to offer sustainable solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges.
