The first-ever universal and legally binding global climate deal was agreed by 195 countries in Paris last December at the COP21 conference.Parliament wants the EU to ratify the Paris climate agreement as soon as possible to ensure it can rapidly enter into force. 

From 21 until 23 September, two events of the EU’s climate change cooperation with Latin America took place in San José, Costa Rica: the EUROCLIMA+ Seminar, which prepared the upcoming cooperation programme between the two continents to meet the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability; and the 4th EUROCLIMA Seminar, which analysed the results of the programme that started in 2010.

Brazil ratifies Paris agreement

The Brazilian government has ratified its participation in the Paris agreement on climate change, a significant step by Latin America’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases that could spur other countries to follow suit.

V LEDS LAC regional workshop took place in Panama

Following the approval of the Paris Agreement during COP21, the fifth edition of the LEDS LAC Regional Workshop was focused on the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and other commitments adopted by countries in the region, as key elements for the transformation of their development patterns.

On 23 and 24 August, the EU-funded EUROCLIMA Programme organises a workshop of Latin American experts to learn about the Early Warning System (SIATA) of Medellín and the Aburrá Valley in Colombia.

Climate finance totaling $81 billion was mobilized for projects funded by the world’s six largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) in 2015. This included $25 billion of MDBs’ direct climate finance, combined with a further $56 billion from other investors.

Peru has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement with the United Nations on 25 July 2016.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation, global temperatures for the first six months of 2016 shattered yet more records, and mean that the year is on track to be the world’s hottest year on record.

According to the report, between 2000 and 2010 seven million hectares of tropical forests were lost each year, mainly due to conversion of forest land into agricultural land.

Event will be organized by ECLAC as part of EUROCLIMA. It will be held on 14 and 15 July in coordination with the Government of Peru, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Environment. The workshop is also supported by the German Federal Government, through GIZ.
