To coincide with Earth Day, over 500 new city actions, showcasing a wealth of inspiring climate action, are being featured on a UN-hosted website, with the aim of building momentum for the upcoming global climate agreement in Paris.

Member States of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) launched a consultative process for the creation of a Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Forum on Sustainable Development, during an extraordinary session of ECLAC's Committee of the Whole. 

The Negotiating Committee of the ‘Declaration on the application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean' will commence its work this spring in order to negotiate a regional instrument for implementing the rights of access to environmental information, participation and justice as set out in Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration, according to a work plan agreed in March 2015.

Latvia hosted informal meetings of the EU's environment and energy ministers to discuss the Union's environmental and climate and energy policies. The two meetings, which took place back-to-back, from 14-16 April, in Riga, Latvia, focused on biodiversity, international climate change negotiations, energy efficiency in the heating and cooling sector, and the interaction between biodiversity and renewable energy development.

Fighting Climate Change Region by Region

A new global agreement to address climate change is taking shape, with the United States joining the European Union in formally submitting its plan to cut greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The US has sent a strong signal by being one of the first to offer this commitment to concrete climate action. In the days ahead, many other countries, including China and India, are expected to add their plans to the mix.

The world’s largest development finance institutions are working together on a common sets of principles for tracking climate finance. They have agreed on the first set for tracking mitigation finance. Similar principles for tracking adaptation finance and leverage are being developed this year.

When COP 21 takes place in Paris this year, it will need to send a signal to business, investors, governments and the public that the transition to a low carbon, resilient world is inevitable.

Risks from climate change are on the rise, jeopardizing hard-won development gains and posing formidable challenges to people and communities around the world. Millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers – from small island states to large urban centres – can testify to this reality, and the recently released IPCC 5th Assessment Report confirms that the challenge of climate change is unprecedented in human history.  Overcoming this challenge requires an unprecedented level of cooperation.

In Costa Rica, where the government has set an ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2021, livestock accounts for 30% of national emissions. Nationally, more than 45,000 livestock farms employ at least 12% of the Costa Rican workforce and occupy over 35.5% of the territory.

The World Bank is pleased to announce the launch of the Green Growth Bond 05/2023, its second Green Bond for retail investors that is linked to the Ethical European Equity Index. This product will allow investors to benefit from the growth potential of an equity index while at the same time, support projects with a positive impact on climate change, financed by the World Bank.

Citi announced today a landmark commitment to lend, invest and facilitate a total of $100 billion within the next 10 years to finance activities that reduce the impacts of climate change and create environmental solutions that benefit people and communities. Citi's previous $50 billion goal was announced in 2007 and was met three years early in 2013.

A key milestone towards a new, universal agreement on climate change was reached in Geneva following seven days of negotiations by over 190 nations. Nations concluded the Geneva Climate Change Talks by successfully preparing the negotiating text for the 2015 agreement. The agreement is set to be reached in Paris at the end of 2015 and will come into effect in 2020.  

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius launched a round of global climate talks in Geneva on Sunday and warned that world security, as well as the environment, depended on their success.

La embajadora de la Unión Europea (UE) en Colombia, María Antonia Van Gool, presentó hoy el proyecto “Páramos: Biodiversidad y recursos hídricos en los Andes del norte”, para promover la conservación de siete páramos andinos de Colombia, Ecuador y Perú, informó la oficina de la UE en Bogotá.

El cambio climático afecta a toda la población del planeta. Sin embargo, existen factores como la distribución desigual de los recursos naturales y económicos o el acceso al poder que limitan la capacidad de parte de la población para hacer frente al calentamiento global. Precisamente, esta situación se hace más visible en el caso de las mujeres.

El banco estadonunidense Citigroup prometió 100,000 millones de dólares a lo largo de diez años para financiar proyectos de lucha contra el calentamiento global.

Adaptando un modelo de colaboración exitosamente aplicado en el proceso de ampliación de la UE, la Comisión Europea ha lanzado la Facilidad Ambiental de Asistencia Técnica e Intercambio de Información (TAIEF), que se desplegará hasta diciembre de 2016. Frente al proceso global de transformación hacia el desarrollo sustentable los logros importantes de la UE en el campo de medio ambiente conllevan conocimientos de interés internacional.
