Means to promote the financing, sustainability and effectiveness of Nature-based Solutions

NbS have played a central role in the discussions at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in recent years, especially at the COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite the fact that NbS are widely recognized as effective measures to address the challenges associated with climate change, there are still some challenges to their implementation.
Among them are challenges related to gathering the necessary data for designing actions, assessing their effectiveness, monitoring benefits, governance for their execution (including the necessary regulatory frameworks) and financing. This policy summary focuses on the challenges associated with promoting and facilitating the financing for NbS that these projects need to address in order to ensure the implementation and sustainability of these measures.

This study pursues the following objectives:
- Identify challenges and best practices at the local level related to natural resource governance processes in Latin American countries.
Nature-based Solutions have increasingly gained relevance in the field of climate action, and have been incorporated into countries' climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions - NDCs).
The project “Green Economic Recovery: Mobilizing investments towards a low-emission and climate-resilient economy in Latin America and the Caribbean” aimed to support selected LAC countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Grenada, Honduras and Panama) to address the main barriers faced by countries when designing, planning and financing post-COVID-19 recovery plans aligned with the Paris Agreement.
La crisis económica y sanitaria generada por la pandemia del COVID-19 ha producido cambios significativos en la movilidad urbana de América Latina, observándose patrones regresivos como el incremento en el uso del automóvil particular o el aumento de motocicletas de reparto, así como una fuerte disminución del uso de los servicios de transporte público y del uso de sistemas de bicicletas compartidas.
El proyecto busca mejorar la resiliencia al cambio climático de sistemas productivos y cadenas de valor de pequeña escala y agricultura familiar en cuatro provincias andinas, en Ecuador y Perú.
El estudio “Incorporando la adaptación al cambio climático y el enfoque de género en Planes de Manejo de Páramos (PMP): Estudio de caso Provincia de Tungurahua – Ecuador” ha sido elaborado en el marco del proyecto “Resiliencia Andina: fortaleciendo la producción agropecuaria de pequeña escala en zonas vulnerables al cambio climático en la sierra de Ecuador y Perú”, del programa EUROCLIMA+ en el sector Producción Resiliente de Alimentos (PRA). Las acciones en el sector PRA son implementadas por la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) y Expertise France.
