Within the framework of the II Conference of the Cities: Towards a Secure, Affordable and Sustainable Mobility, carried out in Santiago, Chile from October 16 to 19, 2018 by EUROCLIMA+, a variety of sessions were presented regarding urban mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This conference was attended by officials, experts and representatives of civil society from Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Cuba, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala and Peru, with the objective of sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Prior to the start of the Conference, the EUROCLIMA+ Programme Partners Meeting for the Urban Mobility Component was held on October 15, in which representatives of various organisations met, such as the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Municipal Associations (FLACMA), German Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Mexico (GIZ), the French Development Agency (AFD), and Despacio, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), among others. The outcome of the meeting was the creation of a comprehensive vision for mobility that allowed global project planning with the definition of specific results.

The first of the sessions organised by EUROCLIMA+, entitled “National Urban Mobility Policies (PNMU) in Latin America and the Caribbean”, took place on October 16, followed by the session on “Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) in Latin America and the Caribbean”. In both sessions the integration between planning, administration, urban financing and mobility systems in Latin America and the Caribbean was promulgated in order to achieve sustainable urban development and comply with the Regional Action Plan, the New Urban Agenda and the Paris Agreement.

On the other hand, on October 17, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform for Latin America (PLATMUS, www.platmus.lat), a digital tool that will host the regional community of practice for the Urban Sustainable Mobility component, was presented. PLATMUS is an initiative funded by EUROCLIMA+ and coordinated by FLACMA in collaboration with ECLAC, UN Environment and MobiliseYourCity. This platform promotes knowledge generation and sharing that accelerates the transition towards sustainable urban mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean. Everyone concluded that PLATMUS will work as a unifying tool between the public, private and civil sectors.

Finally, the Preparation of the Urban Transportation Project was presented on the 19th, to finance training along with the Urban Mobility Transformation Initiative (ITMU). This preparation resulted in regional training that gave the participants the necessary skills for the correct implementation of their projects, which will surely be reflected in the number of successful cases.
