Contributions of indigenous peoples to climate action in Latin America: Experiences in the forests, biodiversity and ecosystems sector

The EUROCLIMA+ programme projects in the “Forests, Biodiversity and Ecosystems” (FBE) sector are implemented, in most cases, in regions with indigenous populations. Many of the implementing entities of these projects have extensive experience and knowledge of the problems of indigenous peoples and the promotion of their rights. Similarly, some of these entities have been working with indigenous peoples and local communities for a long time, collecting and systematizing their knowledge on vulnerability to climate change, in addition to identifying climate change mitigation and/or adaptation solutions that are currently being implemented, or finding new solutions together.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) focus on the importance of ecosystems, and the services they provide people, to offer sustainable solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges.
El proyecto busca mejorar la resiliencia al cambio climático de sistemas productivos y cadenas de valor de pequeña escala y agricultura familiar en cuatro provincias andinas, en Ecuador y Perú.
NbS have played a central role in the discussions at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in recent years, especially at the COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite the fact that NbS are widely recognized as effective measures to address the challenges associated with climate change, there are still some challenges to their implementation.
The project “Green Economic Recovery: Mobilizing investments towards a low-emission and climate-resilient economy in Latin America and the Caribbean” aimed to support selected LAC countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Grenada, Honduras and Panama) to address the main barriers faced by countries when designing, planning and financing post-COVID-19 recovery plans aligned with the Paris Agreement.
La recopilación de experiencias de sobre co-innovación para el desarrollo se desarrolló en el marco del sector temático Producción Resiliente de Alimentos (PRA) del programa EUROCLIMA+, financiado por la Unión Europea y cofinanciado por el gobierno federal de Alemania a través del Ministerio Federal de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo (BMZ), así como los gobiernos de Francia y España. Las acciones en el sector PRA son implementadas por la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) y Expertise France.
