European Development Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, will today announce new EU support of €2.5 billion for Latin America for the years 2014 to 2020 (including funding for regional programmes, and for the bilateral envelopes to the eligible countries).
The first ever comprehensive overview of the soils of Latin America and the Caribbean elaborated by the JRC, in the framework of the EUOCLIMA programme, has been published today.
'The Science Policy Workshop: Impacts of Global Climate Change on Snow, Glaciers and Water Resources in the Andes: Policy Recommendations for Adaptation Strategies' addressed the optimization of research efforts and identified science-based policy needs for climate change adaptation strategies in the Andean region, with a focus on its water resources.

The Deputy Minister for Development Cooperation and the Minister's Office in charge, Jaime Miranda, closed this afternoon the II Regional Dialogue on Climate Finance in Latin America and the Caribbean.
"We have a clear mandate to encourage governmental institutions to seek intersectoral solutions that allow urgent adaptation to this environmental phenomenon (climate change)“ said the Deputy Minister for Development Cooperation.
Representatives from the Ministries of Finances, Environment, Planning and Foreign affairs will attend this event. The event is financed by Development Cooperation partners such as UNDP, UNEP through REGATTA, the European Commission through its EUROCLIMA programme, the Inter-American Development (IADB), the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), among others. For the European Commission, Mr. Stefan Agne from the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) will present the EU experience in taking advantage of the private sector for climate change financing. The Director of EUROCLIMA's Technical Assistance, Mr. Jan Karremans, participates in the Organisation Committee of this event.
Peru will host the global largest event on climate change in 2014.

Latin America is home to a large number of institutions with a high level of technical and scientific knowledge and considerable experience in the water sector.
The aim of EUROCLIMA is to help improve the knowledge of Latin American decision-makers and scientists regarding the impact of climate change in the region, and therefore facilitate integration of the issue within sustainable development strategies.
