Dialogues on experiences about the role of women in the family livestock production systems of Salta

A participatory workshop on gender, livestock and climate change was held as part of the support for the development of a Plan for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG)

in the livestock sector of the province of Salta, Argentina.

Salta (Argentina), 29 November 2021.- On 29 November, the workshop Gender, livestock production and climate change took place, a meeting to analyse the role of women in family livestock production systems in Salta, within the framework of the action Development of a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan for the Livestock Sector in Salta, coordinated by the Secretariat of Environment of the Province of Salta, and accompanied by the EUROCLIMA+ programme through the International and Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policy.

The meeting was introduced by Constanza Pelleschi, Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development of Salta, who presented the general guidelines of this action and the general framework in which the workshop is inserted. Afterwards, Laura María Califano and Gisela Córdoba held a dialogue based on the following axes: vulnerability, gender inequality, particularities of the productive and societal systems according to regions and the impacts at the level of their relationship with the environment.

Finally, a debate was opened among the participants, which allowed us to examine problems in the working conditions of the livestock sector in terms of gender and in a context of climate crisis, and to socialise the work experiences of rural farming/indigenous women linked to the livestock - poultry sector on a family scale or small producers-, recovering their experiences, knowledge and productive practices that contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions and the stewardship of biodiversity. Among the participants were producers, farmers, representatives of associations, public and private organisations, and advanced students of related careers.

The session allowed the participants to understand the role of women in small-scale livestock systems, identifying their conditions of vulnerability; to incorporate gender variables in their perspectives of analysis linked to the climate crisis and in their productive practices; and to make the participants aware of the actions carried out by the project, so that they become agents for the promotion of climate change actions that mitigate the effects of Greenhouse Gases.
