The first session was held with the participation of national representatives from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay, and focused on the countries' training and exchange needs.
Santiago de Chile, July 22, 2020. On June 24, the first multi-country meeting for exchange and dialogue was held, part of the action Regional Collaboration for the transparency and completion of the NDCs through the generation of Long-Term Climate Strategies, developed under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme.
This initiative aims to reduce the gaps in planning and implementation of climate actions in the five participating countries. To this end, the programme has created a collaborative network for long-term climate planning, which will allow the exchange and also the construction of a regional vision for the development of Long-Term Climate Strategies (LTCS) in Latin America.
As Silvia Brugger, GIZ's Climate Governance Coordinator for the EUROCLIMA+ programme, states, "the establishment of this type of exchange platform at the regional level is fundamental not only for compliance with the Paris Agreement, but also for the development of a long-term regional vision that will permeate Latin American climate action and aim for sustainable development. To this end, institutional strengthening and joint learning are a priority and one of our lines of action with the programme".
The first session was focused on generating a dialogue and exchange among the five countries regarding the experiences and short-term needs of each one, within the framework of the development process of their Long Term Climate Strategies, as well as sharing the main results of the Diagnosis of Training and Experience Exchange Needs and the recommendations prepared for the design of the training and experience exchange programme considered by this project.
The dialogue held in this first session allowed us to know the state of progress of the different countries, the different emphases, concerns and lessons they have learned so far, and it gave us many lessons and projections for the continuity of the exchange in order to make this platform a fruitful action for climate action in the region.
In this regard, among the main conclusions raised by the participants is the relevance of the synergy allowed by these exchanges; the need to involve the different sectors of society; the change of paradigm necessary for the implementation of the LTCS and the contribution that would be the incorporation of other experiences into these exchange sessions, both in the region and in Europe.
This multi-country action is developed under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, and is implemented by the UN Environment agencies, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
