Specialists from the administrations of 10 Latin American countries address the adaptation of their systems to the Global Climate Services Framework.
Mexico City, June 17. - Between the 17th and the 28th of June, the first Basic Course on Climate Services was held in Mexico City, aimed at meteorological services officials from 10 Latin American countries -Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba and Colombia.
The objective of the course was to train experts from the NMHSs on the provision of climate services and knowledge of the characteristics of regionalised climate change scenarios, advancing towards the unification of criteria and methodologies. Its aim is to contribute to the implementation of the Global Climate Services Framework, an initiative of the World Meteorological Organisation established at the III World Climate Conference (CMC-3), which seeks to “improve the quality and volume of climate services worldwide, particularly in developing countries,” noting as one of its priorities the “Creation of capacity – Supporting the systematic development of institutions, infrastructure and human resources necessary for effective climate services”.
Climate services are those services aimed at improving society's ability to adapt to the dangers related to climate variability and climate change. They provide information related to the climate to facilitate decision making at personal and institutional levels. Effective climate services facilitate decision making adapted to changing climate conditions and minimise the negative impacts that are occurring in our societies.
Climate Scenarios are estimates of possible future climate features. In order to have adequate spatial and temporal resolution, Regionalised Scenarios are generated, which serve as a reference in preparing specific impact and vulnerability studies and assessing the needs for adaptation to climate change in various socioeconomic sectors (such as production, civil defence or infrastructure) and ecological systems.
The activity is carried out under the framework of the actions that the EUROCLIMA+ programme is developing in the area of generation of regionalised climate scenarios, within the “Climate Services” line of action, and with the participation of experts from the State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET), the Rovira i Virgili University and the Veracruzana University (Mexico).
