On Tuesday, November 8, the cycle of technical workshops began, aimed at students of educational centres in 8 localities of the department of San José, Uruguay, which are exclusively supplied by groundwater from the Raigón Aquifer and are located within the Santa Lucía River Basin.
These educational activities are part of the final stage of the Pilot Project for the Determination of Protection Perimeters for Groundwater Wells, which is being carried out within the framework of the Adaptation in Action - Santa Lucía Basin project, which seeks to ensure the drinking water supply for 60% of the country's population.
This project is implemented by the National Water Directorate (Dinagua) of the Uruguayan Ministry of Environment and is financed by the European Union through the Euroclima+ programme, which delegates funds to the implementing agencies: the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
The pilot project aims to determine protection perimeters that safeguard human water supply in the long term, both in terms of quality and quantity. Through educational workshops, carried out in the final stage of the pilot project, the aim is to raise awareness among the student population about the importance of groundwater and the care that must be taken to ensure its quality and quantity.

The workshops were organised and delivered by an inter-institutional team, made up of technicians from Dinagua, the Regional Centre for Groundwater Management (CeReGAS), OSE, ANEP, Ceibal and the Municipality of San José. The following workshops are planned for the coming weeks, where different educational centres in the remaining localities will be visited.
