Euroclima kicks off the activities in its Pavilion at COP27 with two strategic events

Two strategic events. The launch of the publication "Latin American Economic Outlook (LEO) 2022: Towards a green and just transition" and "Visions of sustainable development in a 2-1.5˚

context: the Learning by Doing project".

7 November 2022, Sharm-El-Seikh, Egypt. - The EUROCLIMA programme started its activities today in the COP27 Pavilion with two strategic events: The launch of the publication "Latin American Economic Outlook (LEO) 2022: Towards a green and just transition" and "Visions of sustainable development in a 2-1.5˚ context: the Learning by Doing project".

The afternoon began with the presentation of the Latin American Economic Outlook (LEO), a joint production of the OECD Development Centre, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and the European Commission, whose 15th edition is "Towards a Green and Just Transition".

The report illustrates the ambitious agenda facing Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to make the green transition an opportunity to achieve a more just and sustainable development model and it aims to analyse and provide policy recommendations on the green transition in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

The event had two moments, an initial one where different authorities of the co-authoring institutions gave a speech on the occasion of the publication, and a second moment where the key messages and the main conclusions of LEO 2022 and the interventions of the Latin American and Caribbean countries were presented. Finally, it was concluded with a closing by the OECD.

The second part of the afternoon was devoted to the event “Visions of sustainable development in a 2-1,5˚ context: the Learning by Doing Project”, where the methodology, progress, findings and results of the project in Mexico and the Dominican Republic were presented, and then contrasted with similar examples in the African region (with the case of South Africa) and in the Middle East (with the case of development in Lebanon).

One of the leaders of the Learning by Doing project, José Alberto Garibaldi, shared the main lines of the project, based on citizens' future perspectives on what a good life could be in 2050 in Latin American societies while moving towards futures compatible with a 2 to 1.5 degree higher temperature.

During his presentation, Mr. Garibaldi showed how the project, mostly driven by civil society and academia, uses this approach to develop sectoral policies and analyses as well as sharing examples of projects that contribute to developing them in specific locations.

The event ended with a panel of commentators who, from the experience of Chile, the Dominican Republic and Lebanon, offered their views on how, through the reformulation of certain sectors such as urban mobility, social spaces can be generated to co-create a future free of fossil fuels and without affecting in the short term the possibilities for consumption and production of current societies.
