The European Union expands its climate collaboration with the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic

The Caribbean country joins the EUROCLIMA programme with funding from the European Development Funds (EDF).

Santo Domingo, 19 May 2022 -. The European Union and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic have held today in Santo Domingo the first workshop for the incorporation of the Caribbean country into EUROCLIMA, the European Union programme on environmental sustainability and climate change in Latin America. This collaboration signifies the expansion of cooperation with the Caribbean in the framework of the Programme, which is already working in Cuba and plans to incorporate another 15 Caribbean countries in the coming months.

nota3The main objective of the workshop was to analyse the actions prioritised in the Dominican Republic in the context of its integration into EUROCLIMA. These actions, proposed to support the fulfilment of the Dominican Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), include the strengthening of disaster management preparedness in the processes of emergency response to forest fires, the increase of electric vehicles in the public sector and the design of a pilot project for the incorporation of 130 electric buses in the vehicle fleets of public and private entities.

nota5Dominican authorities from the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources, Presidency and Economy; the National Council on Climate Change; the National Emergency Commission and the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport participated in the assessment of these actions. On the EU side, the workshop was attended by the EU Delegation in the country; the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Policies (FIIAPP), as implementing agency; and representatives of Spanish public institutions that will support the actions (Ministries of the Interior, Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda).

With this workshop we kick off the activities in the Dominican Republic in the framework of EUROCLIMA+, the European Union's flagship programme on environmental sustainability and climate change," said Maria Gonzalez Mata, Head of the Cooperation Section of the Delegation of the European Union at the opening of the workshop.

She also stressed that "the transition to low-carbon economies and climate resilience contributes to eradicating poverty and promoting an equitable distribution of resources, but this requires the joint effort of all sectors of society".

The integration of the Dominican Republic into the EUROCLIMA programme is supported by funding from the European Development Funds (EDF) 2022. This incorporation culminates a previous trajectory of exchanges between the Dominican Republic and the European Union regarding climate action, which until now had taken place through dialogue forums with peer institutions in the region that had public policy agendas shared by EUROCLIMA.

The Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in coordination with the National Council on Climate Change, will be the technical focal point for this collaboration, while the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development will perform the role of national focal point.
