EUROCLIMA+ analyses Glasgow's new work programme for ACE

The Euroclima+ programme, with FIIAPP as implementing agency, is launching a series of open webinars dedicated to ACE and cross-cutting issues in the run-up to COP27.

21 April 2022. Yesterday, Thursday, the first of the webinars focused on addressing cross-cutting issues in ACE took place, held by the Euroclima+ programme, with the aim of providing a space for reflection in the run-up to the next COP27.

On this occasion, the webinar addressed the challenges and opportunities of the new ACE Programme that emerged from COP26 last November in Glasgow, and focused on sharing the experiences and reflections that, from Latin American countries, are materialising in climate plans and policies oriented to the six dimensions: education, training, social awareness, access to information, citizen participation and international cooperation.

The webinar addressed a comprehensive perspective on the programme through a framework presentation by Yayo Herrero, ACE expert for FIIAPP, who detailed the progress made by this programme in the implementation of the ACE agenda in the region. Next, we had the participation of the Climate Change Office of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge with Francisco Heras, who analysed how Spain is participating in the implementation of the agenda. In a second block, we were able to share the experience of Argentina from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, with Luz Falivene, and of Chile, from the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Environment with Johanna Arriagada. The last block focused on a discussion between the three countries Spain, Chile and Argentina.

The contributions were very enriching, highlighting relevant issues such as the importance of having technical guidelines for ACE monitoring and evaluation policies, the territoriality and contextualisation of ACE in each of the areas in which it is applied, taking into account cultural and social specificities, the priority of public participation in climate change policies, and especially the participation of vulnerable populations and indigenous peoples, as well as the need to move forward with a work plan and a firm roadmap to promote ACE in the Latin American region, the Glasgow Programme at COP26 and the future COP27 document.

The session ended by inviting the audience to continue participating in upcoming webinars that will address cross-cutting issues such as participatory processes of citizens' assemblies on Climate Change and the role of youth in future climate challenges.
