With the presence of representatives of all project implementers, the Board of Directors was installed for Water for Abancay and its communities forever , the project of the Urban Water sector of EUROCLIMA+ that is being implemented in Peru.
December 10, 2020. Lima, Peru. Last Thursday, December 3, 2020, the Board of Directors of the project "Water for Abancay and communities forever was installed: develop strategies of urban resilience to climate change in the Mariño hydrographic microbank", at a meeting held in Abancay, Peru, and attended by representatives of the French Development Agency (AFD), the general management of the water and sanitation company of Abancay – EMUSAP Abancay, representatives of SUNASS and Helvetas Peru, implementing partners of this project of the Urban Water sector of EUROCLIMA+.
Water for Abancay (short name) works on activities to raise awareness, articulate, and coordinate actions to increase water security in the city of Abancay and in rural communities located in the Mariño micro-basin, which supplies 100 percent of the water used by Emusap Abancay. The project is implemented in the districts of Abancay and Tamburco, and in the upper part of the Mariño micro-basin, benefiting around 65,000 users of the potable water service.
"Today we are installing this very important project for the region, as it seeks to ensure the availability of water and its equitable use among men and women in the Mariño micro-basin. In addition, because it allows us to broaden the conception of the water and sanitation problem through the action and involvement of a private water company, which is taking into account the diverse dynamics that occur in the territory. This is how Agua para Abancay joins efforts in the implementation of the Mechanisms of Remuneration for Ecosystem Services (MERESE) in Abancay", were the words of Iván Lucich Larrauri, Executive President of SUNASS.
Water, an integrating axis between urban and rural areas
One day before the meeting, on December 2, 2020, representatives of the implementing entities visited the catchment, treatment, storage, and distribution infrastructure, including the drinking water treatment plant and the wastewater treatment plant financed and built by the Regional Government of Apurimac, which will be officially transferred to EMUSAP Abancay for management at the beginning of 2021. These plants will play a key role in the implementation of the project by closing the urban water cycle and ensuring better management of potable water and sanitation services.
For his part, Luis Acosta Sullcahuamán, of the Directorate of Ambito for Sunass Services, indicated that "the project represents an opportunity to generate information useful for the design of a better system for water management operation in the area; as well as in the generation of optimal information for decision-making by the Regional Government of Apurímac, which requires quick and evidence-based responses."
The project integrates the protection, restoration and management of ecosystems in the headwaters of the basin where the water source is located (supply) through a local and sustainable investment mechanism 'Mechanisms for the Remuneration of Ecosystem Services-MERESE Mariño'; the optimisation of water demand in the city through the monitoring and control of water losses and awareness raising; and the strengthening and consolidation of governance spaces for the integrated management of water resources.
"The project is committed to the rural and urban communities of Abancay, seeking to strengthen the capacities and technical skills of water managers in the area, as well as to raise awareness and develop the capacities of young men and women, under a focus on urban water resilience and ecosystem management to guarantee the availability of water in the future, within the framework of public policies", emphasised Marco Sotomayor, Project Coordinator for Helvetas Peru. "Water is the integrating axis between urban and rural areas", he concluded.
