EUROCLIMA+ promotes sustainable, low-carbon urban mobility in Latin America

Bogotá, February 27, 2020. The Urban Mobility Component of the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) organised Sustainable Transport Week in Latin America and the Caribbean in Bogota for February 17 to 21, in which advisors, counterparts, partners and beneficiaries from the 19 EUROCLIMA+ projects implemented in 12 Latin American countries to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector participated.

The objective of this meeting was to exchange experiences and progress in the projects to strengthen their implementation. Participants also presented the challenges identified during project development in 2019. Finally, support needs in the Latin American transport sector will be identified through the regional Community of Practice.

The broad and very productive work agenda consisted of the following activities. In the first work session, the projects implemented under the framework of the EC+ programme were announced, as well as their progress; information on new developments in the EUROCLIMA+ programme in the new phase; and a presentation on the EUCLIDES platform which
will facilitate project monitoring and progress, the EC+ Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform in Latin America, and the MobiliseYourCity global alliance,
The EC+ Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform in Latin America and the MobiliseYourCity global alliance, which offers a space for meeting and dialogue to facilitate gathering information in the region, among other services for national and local governments, and technicians and decision makers in the region.

During the second workday, the attendees participated in the session on gender where they received orientation regarding the inclusion of mainstreaming the gender approach in EC+ projects through the toolbox, and they learned about the best practices being carried out in Colombia. They also learned about the various existing sources of climate financing for the transport and mobility sector (at both national and local levels); and to finish the day, participants worked on the importance of visibility and communication for their projects.

On the third work day a technical visit was made with the aim of getting to know the Transmilenio and TransMiCable mass public transport system with their impact on mobility and emissions reductions by allowing the integration of the BRT system with the cable system and a bicycle parking area. The day ended with two working sessions, one on climate change and transport and the other on the “Avoid, Change and Improve” strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of transportation.

Finally, the work done during Sustainable Transport Week closed out the last two days, February 20 and 21, with workshops, one for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) with the aim of improving the quality of SUMP development activities in implementation and increasing the climate impact. The other workshop was on transport and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the participation of several professionals from countries working in the various areas and divisions of Climate Change, and familiarity with the NDCs and transport, such as EUROCLIMA+'s NUMP projects.
