La Paz, Bolivia, December 10, 2019 - In the presence of the ambassadors of the European Union and France in Bolivia, Mr. León De La Torre and

Mr. Denis Gaillard, for the European Union-funded Euroclima+ programme, signed a cooperation agreement between the French Agency for Development and the Autonomous Municipal Government of La Paz for the amount of 500,000 euros.

This cooperation will make it possible to finance the first phase of the development of the bicycle path network in the southern macro-district of La Paz.

The project has been selected for the Urban Mobility component of the Euroclima+ Programme, which contributes to environmental sustainability and climate change-resilient development in Latin America. The Programme is implemented in close coordination with Focal Points in each partner country. In Bolivia, the Focal Point is Mr. Ramiro Burgos - Municipal Secretary of Mobility for the Autonomous Municipal Government of La Paz.

This initiative is part of the programme “A city for pedestrians, canes, wheelchairs, sports, leisure, and healthy bodies” for the city of La Paz. During the ceremony, Mr. Luis Revilla, Mayor of the Municipality of La Paz, presented the preliminary images of the bicycle path design, which will have a length of 5 kilometres in the Southern Macro District of the city. The Municipality proposed to start with the bicycle lane in the Southern Macro District, due to the success of the Sunday bicycle tours that pass through this area.

The objective set for the next few years is to extend it to six other macro districts (Cotahuma, Maximiliano Paredes, Periférica, San Antonio, Mallasa, Centro and Sur) to encourage cycling and reduce urban pollution.

The strategies that will be developed under the plan’s framework include: consolidating the mobility system in an inclusive and safe manner, in accordance with the physical and territorial characteristics of the municipality, in order to ensure orderly and efficient access, use and articulation of the territory.
