Strategies were designed for better implementation of the electric tricycles project.
San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala, October 23. - From October 4 to 6, an expert’s panel was convened for the "Strategy and proposal for urban interventions to improve mobility in the urban centre of San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenago", which met with international specialists to make a diagnosis and develop strategies to improve mobility in the municipality of San Juan Comalapa.
For three days, architects, urban planners, public officials and international consultants carried out a series of activities, including a diagnostic workshop, definition of goals and production work, as well as a mural painting with instruction from a local artist.
San Juan Comalapa is a region with complicated geography. As a compact municipality with many slopes, transportation access is difficult. The Electric Tricycles Pilot Project, which is part of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, aims to introduce electric transport to replace the tuck-tucks, tricycles with gasoline motors.
As part of the work of this project, a workshop was held with the media and the owners of this means of transportation to find better mechanisms for implementing electric tricycles and reducing CO2 emissions in the region.
In addition, data on population movements broken down by gender, age, studies and occupation, were provided to help promote decisions to improve mobility in this region of Guatemala.
Subsequently, the experts took a trip in the tuck-tucks to experience the conditions that the population endures when traveling in these means of transport on streets which, in many cases, are narrow and not paved, with many slopes and curves.
On the last day, the specialists who took part in the workshop conducted interviews and did mapping with the community in order to understand their concerns and needs, as well as to identify the vulnerable inhabitants who require better integration in mobility matters.
During the afternoon, participants helped paint a mural on an avenue in San Juan Comalapa. Its execution was coordinated by local artist Giovanni Mijangos Chex.
At the end of the panel session, the experts ordered and analysed the data obtained during the three days of work to generate materials that could improve accessibility conditions and the urban image of San Juan Comalapa. The results were submitted to Municipality officials.
