Córdoba, Argentina, September 18, 2019 - Under the framework of the European Union-funded EUROCLIMA+ programme, the signing of a cooperative

agreement by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Municipality of Cordoba was carried out.

This agreement, for a non-reimbursable amount of 600 thousand euros, will update the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and formulate Mobility Strategies in the Central Area for the city of Cordoba. In addition, it will contribute to establishing a transport supply adapted to the needs of the inhabitants and to fight against climate change.

The project has been selected under the framework of the Urban Mobility component of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, which contributes to environmental sustainability and climate resilient development in Latin America. This is implemented in close coordination with the National Focal Points in each partner country. In Argentina, the National Focal Point is Dr Patricia Holzman, head of the General Coordination Unit of the Government Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development.

The Mayor of the Municipality of Córdoba, Ramón Javier Mestre, highlighted “the importance of adapting the city's mobility plan and resolving structural issues to develop sustainable forms of mobility,” adding that there is “a strong will on the part of the current government to have sustainable urban mobility processes underway that can have continuity in successive administrations”.

The representative of the European Union Delegation, Luis Pedro Pereira, congratulated the cooperation established between the Municipality and AFD, and mentioned that “the initiative is in full agreement with the sustained environmental commitment of the EU and AFD”.

The director of AFD in Argentina, Juliette Grundman, specified that “the SUMPs will be developed according to three key cross-cutting aspects: the evaluation of the impact of the proposed measures on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the participation of the authorities and civil society, and the choice of actions that promote gender equality”.

An international consultancy will be contracted to carry out this study, which should begin its work in early 2020 for a duration of one and a half years. The new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan will be characterised by a long-term vision, institutional strengthening and a participatory process in order to reach a consensus on the document among the different actors in the sector.

The strategies that will be developed under the framework of the plan include: orienting the development of an integrated public transport network to achieve greater efficiency, improving traffic management and road safety, improving infrastructure and facilities for non-motorised transport, selecting priority corridors for mass passenger transport, improving the institutional and financial framework, and developing programmes to optimise urban freight logistics.
