Transport operators, the private sector, academia, civil society and the public sector are working to achieve sustainable urban mobility in Ambato, Ecuador

May 9, 2019. Ambato, Ecuador. Within the framework of the agreement signed between the Municipal Decentralised Autonomous Government of Ambato and German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), the workshop “Ambato towards sustainable urban mobility” was organised in April with the participation of 50 people from the public sector, sector private, transport operators, citizen groups and associations of people with reduced mobility.

This event is the first public activity for the process to update the Ambato mobility plan, a project financed by the EUROCLIMA+ programme and executed with technical support from GIZ, which aims to incorporate a different approach in the city’s transportation planning and management, where people and their accessibility to the city’s opportunities are the central hub and where measures are also taken that allow transportation to contribute to efficient resource use and reducing environmental pollution.

The purpose of the workshop was to inform about what this municipal project entails and to jointly develop a vision of where Ambato's mobility should go in the future. For this, diverse group dynamics were organised to identify the challenges that must be faced and opportunities for Ambato to achieve this innovative vision. In addition, the measures that should be implemented as a priority and what each sector can contribute to the process were discussed. The latter, because it is expected that this project will be built together with key actors for the city’s mobility, in order to meet the needs of each sector.
