An event where people were invited to be part of the Urban Mobility Platform, a project implemented by FLACMA with funding from EUROCLIMA+.
1 June 2019, Mexico. The 11th International Transport Congress (CIT) organised by the Mexican Association of Transport and Mobility (AMTM), in collaboration with the National Federation of Municipalities of Mexico (FENAMM) and the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Local Government Associations (FLACMA), was held from 30 May to 1 June.
In the framework of this Congress, FLACMA coordinated the round table "Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility in Latin America" with the aim of sharing and reflecting on the actions that are being carried out in various Latin American cities to promote sustainable urban mobility.
International specialists Harvey Scorcia, Senior Executive of the Infrastructure Technical Analysis and Evaluation Directorate of the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF); Mathias Merforth, Senior Advisor for the Sustainable Urban Mobility Component and the CiClim Programme of the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Mexico (GIZ) participated in this roundtable; and as local government mobility authorities, Alberto Ramírez Bracho, General Director of Sustainable Mobility of the Secretariat of Mobility and Transport of Hidalgo, Mexico; and Mario Silva Rodríguez, General Director of the Metropolitan Institute of Planning for the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, Mexico.
The four presentations focused on:
- Challenges and opportunities of Transport in LATAM by Harvey Scorcia who shared the experience of Panama City and presented the main challenges for this city and how CAF has contributed with Panama to achieve important advances in the implementation of organised quality public transport.
- Appropriate solutions to transform mobility by Mathias Merforth, who focused on intellectual capital for mobility transformation, highlighting the most innovative "intellectual engineering" solutions for improving transport infrastructure.
- Present actions with a vision for the future by Alberto Ramírez, who presented the actions carried out to date by the government of Hidalgo in terms of mobility, as well as the importance of implementing cross-cutting policies that consider long-term impacts.
- Mobility Problems in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area; Mario Silva. He spoke about the experience of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, its areas of opportunity and the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), based on the MobiliseYourCity methodology, which seeks to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants by guaranteeing access to transport for all citizens, a project that has financial support from the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
As part of the recapitulation and conclusions, three important points were highlighted: 1) the need for local governments to invest in infrastructure and active mobility systems, 2) the challenge in implementing intellectual capital, as well as training and institutional strengthening options, and 3) the importance of planning from a user's point of view.
Finally, Mónica Solórzano, Coordinator of the Project for the construction of the Regional Community of Practice for Sustainable Urban Mobility of MobiliseYourCity and moderator of the round table, invited the participants to be part of this regional community of practice through the Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform, a project implemented by FLACMA and financed by EUROCLIMA+ in coordination with German Cooperation for Sustainable Development.
About the projects of the Urban Mobility component
These projects aim for national urban mobility policies and programmes and integrated multimodal and participatory planning at city level to accelerate the transition of Latin American cities towards sustainable, low-carbon mobility.
This is a component implemented by GIZ and the French Development Agency (AFD).
