Reforestation, prevention plans and articulation of alliances in Peru and Ecuador under the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ project. “Risk Management without Borders”

Friday, August 23, 2019, (Piura) Peru.  Climate change poses enormous challenges in different countries of the world. Through the European Union’s EUROCLIMA+ Programme and within the framework of the Risk Management component implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD), the "Binational Vulnerability Reduction Project for the Population and its Livelihoods against the Threats of Droughts and Floods in the Border Territories of Ecuador and Peru" or "Risk Management without Borders", is being implemented in the countries of Peru and Ecuador, developing various actions in the Piura region of the Peruvian territory.

REFORESTATION

In the upper part of the Catamayo Chira basin, the five districts of Ayabaca, Sicchez, Jililí, Montero and Suyo have begun the process to reforest 150 hectares as the starting point for a necessary change to reverse the degradation of natural resources and improve quality of life of the population.

The Piura Regional Government through the Regional Management of Natural Resources and Environmental Management has been delivering toolkits, inputs and materials for the installation and implementation of municipal agroforestry nurseries to the municipal authorities of each district. These forest nurseries contribute to protecting and reforesting degraded areas, and they help protect and secure the water resources that feed the population during drought seasons.

PREVENTION PLANS

Other activities under the project’s framework began awareness-raising and training workshops for the process of formulating the Disaster Risk Prevention and Reduction Plan in the district of Ayabaca, held on Wednesday, August 21.

The regional official, Eng. Manuel Querevalú, reported that there will be 10 prevention plans that will be carried out in the highland districts of Ayabaca, Sicchez, Jililí, Montero and Suyo; and in the lowland districts of La Huaca, Vichayal, Colán, Amotape and Miguel Checa. "We have also started in Ayabaca and are in the process of hiring a consultant to start in the district of Vichayal, in Paita province.

The workshop was held in the Ayabaca province auditorium with the objective of sharing organisational, conceptual and technical aspects for the formulation of the Prevention and Risk Reduction Plan, its importance for the sustainability of development processes, mapping of stakeholders and the proposed Work Plan.

STRATEGIC ALLIANCES

The project’s technical team has been articulating strategic alliances with different State and civil society entities, such as non-governmental organisations that work in disaster risk management and prevention in the Piura region.

The binational project "Risk Management without Borders" is co-executed by the Piura Regional Government, the Loja Provincial Government and the National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador. It is financed by the European Union through the Euroclima+ programme and implemented through the Risk Management component by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
