The project has benefited more than 230,000 inhabitants of 17 districts, located in the provinces of Paita, Sullana and Ayabaca in the Piura region of Peru;

as well as 07 cantons and 03 parishes in the province of Loja in Ecuador, through institutional strengthening for the improvement of governance and local public policy regarding disaster risk management.

Thursday 08 December 2022, Loja (Ecuador). Authorities and personalities from the countries of Italy, France, Ecuador and Peru, participated yesterday in the culmination ceremony of the binational project "Risk Management without Borders" held in the city of Loja, Ecuador. 

The closing ceremony of the "Binational Project for the Reduction of the Vulnerability of the Population and their Livelihoods to Drought and Flood Threats in Border Territories of Ecuador and Peru", presented the results and achievements of the project, and provided a space for the exchange of experiences between authorities of Peru and Ecuador regarding the impact on their communities during the implementation period 2019 - 2022.

The project was funded by the European Union through the EUROCLIMA Plus programme, implemented and supervised in the sector "Disaster risk reduction and management: Droughts and floods" by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD), and it is co-executed by the Piura Regional Government in Peru, the Provincial Government of Loja and the National Service for Risk and Emergency Management in Ecuador, in partnership with the Departement Meurthe et Moselle, Departement L'Aude of France, the L'observatoire des changements en Amérique Latine (LOCAL) and the Province of Viterbo of Italy. This project is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

And finally, to the national risk management policies of both Peru and Ecuador, as well as to the Plan for the Planning, Management and Development of the Catamayo-Chira transboundary basin, in the context of climate change, mainly strengthening the governance capacity and the resilience of the population.

About the Project

The binational project for the reduction of the vulnerability of the population and their livelihoods to drought and flood hazards in the border territories of Ecuador and Peru aims to reduce the vulnerability of the Catamayo-Chira transboundary basin (Ecuador and Peru) by strengthening public institutions for governance in risk management, preparing the civilian border population and improving access to information for the prevention of hazards, with emphasis on droughts and floods.
