The Risk Management without Borders Project, in partnership with the Observatory of Change in Latin America, will work with the mayors of Peru and Ecuador to renew the framework cooperation agreement between the local governments of Ecuador and Peru to improve governance and environmental risk management.

Wednesday, April 14, 2021. (Piura-Loja). With the aim of establishing mechanisms and synergies for cooperation between the authorities of Peru and Ecuador, which contribute to establishing and strengthening the Binational Platform, the Euroclima+ programme through the project "Risk Management without Borders" and the "Observatory of Changes in Latin America", a local NGO from France will initiate a cycle of virtual technical meetings, from April 14 to June 4, ending with the "Binational Meeting of Mayors" under the framework of International Environment Day.

In the Peruvian territory, technical meetings will be held individually with each of the mayors located in the Catamayo-Chira transboundary basin in the Piura region, and on April 27 a meeting will be held with the 17 district mayors involved in the project.

In the Ecuadorian province of Loja, a total of 10 mayors from 7 cantons and 03 parishes will meet virtually during the month of May with officials and technical staff from the Local NGO of France and the "Risk Management without Borders" project.

These technical meetings are expected to renew the framework cooperation agreement between the local governments of Ecuador and Peru, and to improve governance and environmental risk management, integrating the municipalities of the Catamayo-Chira transboundary basin that are not yet part of the Binational Platform; and to promote the strengthening of capacities that include risk management in their work agenda.

Finally, the mayors of the local governments of Peru and the autonomous decentralised governments of Ecuador will participate in a Binational Meeting on Friday June 4 in the framework of International Environment Day, according to the agenda approved by the project's technical team and the Local NGO of France, one of the project's strategic allies.

The "Risk Management without Borders" project is part of the Euroclima+ programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the French Development Agency (AFD) in partnership with the Meurthe et Moselle department of France, L'observatoire des changements en Amérique Latine (Local), the Departement L'Aude France and the Province of Viterbo.

The project is co-executed by the Regional Government of Piura in Peru, through the regional management of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, and the Provincial Prefecture of Loja in Ecuador.
