Panama City, Panama. 16 March 2022. As part of the commemoration of World Energy Efficiency Day, which is celebrated every 5 March, Panama officially began the process of collecting information in the industrial sector for the preparation of its first "Useful Energy Balance (BEU) for the industrial, residential, transport and/or commercial sectors".

Panama is one of the three beneficiary countries along with Ecuador and Paraguay for the development of Useful Energy Balances; through the characterisation of its main energy consumption sectors, arriving at terms for end uses and useful energy to strengthen national capacities and update this instrument to apply it in energy policy.

On March 2nd of this year, the training process for the technical team that will be in charge of gathering the information in the industrial sector of the 3 beneficiary countries of the Project began. The technical team consists of a national coordinator, a fieldwork manager, survey supervisors and interviewers. This training is given in two stages: training for survey supervisors and training for interviewers.

The training of the interviewers from Panama was attended by Dr. Guadalupe González, Director of Electricity of the National Energy Secretariat of Panama, and Eng. Medardo Cadena, Director of Studies, Projects and Information of Olade.

About the BEU project

The project " Preparation of the Energy Balance in Useful Energy Terms for the Industry, Residential, Transport and/or Commercial Sectors (BEU)" is implemented in Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay by the Latin American Energy Organisation (Olade) thanks to the financial support of the European Union's Euroclima+ Programme and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The objective of the BEU Project is to strengthen the technical capacity of the institutions in charge of energy planning, in the management of information at the level of efficient energy use for the preparation and monitoring of energy efficiency policies and plans.

The Useful Energy Balance will be a key tool for proper planning, as well as having a mechanism for monitoring and evaluation of implemented energy efficiency measures.

About the del sector Energy Efficiency sector

The objective of this sector is to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation through the implementation of energy efficiency measures, in accordance with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) assumed by countries under the Paris Agreement.

The actions financed under this sector aim to support countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in the energy sector. Projects are aimed at identifying and financing initiatives that help strengthen capacities, institutions, public policy regulatory frameworks and monitoring systems that promote energy efficiency.
