The side event focuses on challenges and priorities in climate change adaptation and mitigation in Latin America.
The cooperation in the areas of climate change, environment, biodiversity and energy is a key priority under the EU-CELAC Action Plan. The importance of this sector for EU cooperation with Latin America is underlined by the fact that environmental sustainability and climate change benefit from the largest financial allocation (EUR 300 million) under the EU's regional cooperation with Latin America, funded from the Development Cooperation Instrument.
Since the signing of the Paris Agreement there has been an increased focus on the implementation of countries' climate change adaptation and mitigation objectives.
New orientations for EU - Latin America climate change collaboration, based on key results to date, will be at the heart of this side-event. Presentations and exchanges with the audience will illustrate joint EU – Latin America commitments to tackle climate change. The focus will be on the new EUROCLIMA+ regional programme, which was adopted in 2016. The objective of EUROCLIMA+ is to promote environmentally sustainable and climate resilient development in Latin America, to benefit in particular the most vulnerable populations. In this context, EUROCLIMA+ will promote policy dialogue and provide technical and financial support for planning and implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation policies in Latin America. The programme will actively support the integration of climate actions into national and regional policies that stimulate economic growth and social development alongside with environmental protection and climate resilience.
