During the roundtable "Engaging with Latin America and the Caribbean on Climate Change", Mr. Paul Oquist, Minister - Private Secretariat for National Policy, Presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua, gave a presentation on the "Policy Framework for the Transition to a Low-Emission Energy Matrix in the Economic and Social Development of Nicaragua". The roundtable, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, on 16 and 17 october, had the objetive of advancing climate change policy dialogue among the two regions to identify concrete ways of cooperation.
Mr. Paul Oquist's presentation, given during Theme 2 of the agenda "Low-emission development strategies in the EU and in LAC", touched upon the following topics::
- Expansion and transformation of the energy matrix: 25% renewable in 2007 to 90% in 2020,
- Nicaragua´s energy projects,
- Savings by reducing oil imports due to energy projects (2013 - 2020),
- Policy framework: National Human Development Plan 2007 - 2016 and its objective: Economic growth with Macroeconomic stability, Job creation, Poverty and inequality reduction, both economic and gender,
- Investment portafolio, incluidng The Interoceanic Grand Canal of Nicaragua,
- Nicaragua's socio-economic indicators, and
- Environmental adaptation agenda.
