The Ibero-American Forum on Communication and Climate Change is a space for the exchange of experiences and best practices to identify the challenges of journalistic coverage on this issue.

6 September 2021, San José, Costa Rica. The two virtual sessions of the Ibero-American Forum on Communication and Climate Change, an initiative of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID) through its ARAUCLIMA Programme and the Spanish Cooperation Training Centre in Antigua Guatemala, will be held on 9 and 10 September. It is also supported by the Climate Change Communication Network for Latin America (LatinClima).

“The synergies, exchanges and strategies that we can build with journalists and communicators are vital, because only in this way will we be able to place information on the media agenda that promotes awareness of the impact of climate change on people's lives, and thus adopt decisions that modify behaviour, change habits and promote co-responsibility among citizens," said Andrew Scyner, manager of the EUROCLIMA+ programme during the first session of the Ibero-American Forum on Communication and Climate Change.

The forum itself provides a space for conversation between climate experts, journalists from various networks in the region, officials from organisations and international cooperation.

The high-level panels will consist of Andrea Meza, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica and Teresa Ribera, Minister for the Ecological Transition of Spain - on 9 September - and Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Carolina Schmidt, Minister of Environment of Chile and COP25 President - on 10 September.

In addition, technical workshops will focus on communication trends and tools such as audiovisual production and podcasting, as well as media for narrating climate action: social media and photojournalism linked to climate change.

"Spanish Cooperation is committed to the preservation of the environment and the fight against climate change, for this it is imperative that we strengthen synergies and the dissemination of the work in this fight. Communicators are vital for eliminating the information gap and building the sustainable development that we so desire", said Rafael García, General Coordinator of Spanish Cooperation in Costa Rica.

The activity will last two and a half hours each day, starting at 8:00 a.m. (GMT-6 Costa Rica time). Interested members of the public will be able to follow the sessions on the EUROCLIMA+ YouTube channel.
